Grass Fed Beef is Better … for Everyone
At CGL Beef we don’t use any chemicals or vet products on our livestock. Nor do we use any herbicides or un-natural fertilisers on our pasture. While we are not certified organic we do practise organic farming methods.
Importantly we also breed and raise our cattle in the most natural way possible, in the paddock. They graze on pasture their entire lives. They are 100% grass fed, and they are never, ever fed grain or any other un-natural growth accelerating supplements.
We do this because we believe that this is the way it should be done -just like it used to be done. Essentially our cattle are grass fed because grass fed beef is better. Better for our environment, better for our animals, better for our customers and better for us – the farmers.
Better for You
A study by researchers at California State University in Chico examined three decades of research and found that beef from pasture-raised cows fits more closely into goals for a diet lower in saturated fat and higher in “good fats” and other beneficial nutrients. Grass-fed beef is lower in calories, contains more, healthy omega-3 fats, more vitamins A and E, higher levels of antioxidants, and up to seven times the beta-carotene. And most importantly, it is widely acknowledged as having more flavour.
Better for the Environment
Our cattle eat only natural grasses from our pasture and aren’t finished on a diet of grains and supplements for rapid weight gain. Therefore they are much kinder on the environment.
A great deal of energy is used – and greenhouse gasses produced – in growing the grains which are fed to commercial feed lot cattle operations. Of course, none of this applies to our naturally regenerating grasses. Cattle consuming natural grasses also produce far less gas (methane and carbon dioxide) than cattle which are fed grain.
Better for the Cattle
Obviously, an animal that is free to roam, that can graze a range of pasture rather than eating from a trough, that has grass underfoot and can sit and ruminate in the shade of a tree – is living a happier, healthier, more natural life. Cattle are meant to move daily, forage away from their droppings and graze on a variety of fresh grasses.
Better for the Farmer
Buying beef directly from farmers is a logical next step in the “buy local” movement, reminiscent of the way many of our parents or grandparents purchased their meat and much of their fresh provisions.
Importantly it allows small family farming businesses like our own a place in a world where so many are disappearing from existence.
Plus it rewards us for all the hard work we put into producing organic quality cattle and practicing regenerative farming methods. You are supporting the production of a higher quality product in a way that is not detrimental to environment, animal or consumer.
